THE NEW REVOLUTIONARIES

mars 7, 2010
av younginvestorssweden

”The idea of “social entrepreneurship” has struck a responsive chord. It is a phrase well suited to our times. It combines the passion of a social mission with an image of business-like discipline, innovation, and determination commonly associated with, for instance, the high-tech pioneers of Silicon Valley. The time is certainly ripe for entrepreneurial approaches to social problems. Many governmental and philanthropic efforts have fallen far short of our expectations. Major social sector institutions are often viewed as inefficient, ineffective, and unresponsive. Social entrepreneurs are needed to develop new models for a new century.”

- J. Gregory Dees, The Meaning of “Social Entrepreneurship” Original Draft: October 31, 1998 Reformatted and revised: May 30, 2001

A few weeks ago all Young Investors gathered at a annual meeting to discuss our past results and visions for the current year. It is so extremely inspiring to sit in the same room with a group of people in which each and everyone of them has a very special spark: we all see great potential in YI and are committed to contribute our share in making it true. That made me reflect upon what we are and where are we going. Funny enough but in my high school years I almost whished there would be some big revolution that I could go and demonstrate! But things were quite calm and instead we played some games and went out. We are lucky enough to have been brought up in a fairly leisurous world but that does not mean that all is perfect. It is not uncommon to heard that youth is apatic, we can’t be bothered by politics and even less care about the social problems. Generalising is once again misleading. We might not go out and demonstrate, we might not go and vote that very often, don’t start petitions but than again this is what our parents did and we don’t want to do this the same way as our parents didJ As mentioned we grew up in a different world; just as we’ve adapted to numerous new technologies have we found new ways of expressing ourselves and being active. We might not be Che Gueavaras neither Pancho Villa but at the same time we are not threatened by an ideology. Different time, different people, different problems and different way of dealing with them. I believe social entrepreneurship is the future of dealing with social problems. Not only that, I like to see it as the common future business form. We can’t just be taking and grabbing and not giving back a part of it, moreover we can’t just be giving in eternity because we’ve already learned that does not work. You don’t have to work yourself nuts and starve when you’re trying to solve a problem. It simply is not sustainable. Getting payed for work has never been wrong and if you’re gaining in personal growth and network at the same time: even better! That’s what we are: modern days revolutionaries thriving to move mountains of dated economic and charity forms! It is also great to see more and more similar initiatives around us: one I read about just today is Entreprenörsjakten.. definitely worth reading and learning from it!

En God Klassiker!

mars 5, 2010

Breakfast club #5 – Inspired by @judithw

februari 17, 2010
av younginvestorssweden

It’s never easy to go up at 6 in the morning to go for a seminar. Though, for a Young Investors Breakfast Club presenting so exciting speaker as Judith it was definitely worth an effort. It was great to see so many showing up. With coffee and a snack in our laps everyone was ready for the exciting world of social media.

The talk about social media has been around for quite a while and as Judith said it might seem scary and confusing at the beginning but if you give some though and time to get to know it, it might make worthwhile. I can’t agree more especially when it comes to the enormous amounts of information and knowledge out there just waiting to be consumed. At the same time we should not forget the vast possibilities for our own expression – the democratic potentials of Internet. Not only can I read about all possible forms of for example economic activities and theories but also at the same time I am able to take part in the dialogue. We are able to express our own opinions, share our thoughts and debate around issues and topics we’re interested in. And with 1,733,993,741 Internet users around the globe you must be able to find people with similar interests. I guess that is the beauty of it: giving and receiving!

Then there’s a question of usability and as many ask themselves: is it worth spending all that time and effort?  I believe an answer to that can be quite individual or as Judith said there is no worth in blogging or twittering if you don’t think it’s fun. Well even if you try very hard the readers will sooner or later see through that and just loose interest. And it is exactly that same principle that counts for corporate twitters: the fundamental principle of social media is mutual agreement of communicating two-ways. Passive, static and one-way tools/texts/sites is hard to see as sustainable in the long run.

And what did I learn today? I mostly got even more excited and inspired by the vast possibilities that social media offers. Young Investors as a non-profit organisation and members as individuals should we take advantage of that in our mission of spreading social entrepreneurship. Not only promoting it but if I dream a bit also moving the mountains of conventional commercial forms of doing business.

Hope to see you at the next Breakfast Club #6, 10th March 2010.
